It’s All About Instruction: Formative Assessment Network for Literacy Learning PK-5

October 18, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

The Maine DOE is offering a second series of workshops to support effective use of formative assessment practices in PK-5 classrooms to inform literacy instruction and bolster student learning. Three successive workshops, facilitated by Maine DOE specialists and teacher leaders from across the state, will build from current practices to extend and deepen knowledge about formative assessment. Learn more about:

  • components of formative assessment: learning intentions and success criteria; collecting and analyzing evidence of student learning; providing actionable feedback; and employing peer and self-assessment opportunities,
  • formative assessment strategies that benefit literacy teaching and learning, and
  • instruction to promote surface, deep and transfer learning related to ELA/Literacy standards.

Session 1 will introduce foundational understanding of formative assessment practices and focus on creating meaningful learning goals and success criteria.

Session 2 will dig deeper into collecting evidence of student learning through observation and student work, analyzing the evidence and responding with actionable feedback.

Session 3 will continue the focus from session 2 and expand with examples of how to incorporate in peer and self-assessment opportunities.

New participants in the network should register to attend all three day-long (8:30-3:00) sessions in one region of the state. The cost of attendance for the three sessions is $100 total.

Returning participants (educators who took part in the 2016-17 series) are welcome to attend all three sessions, but may opt to attend only sessions 2 and 3 where content will be expanded upon from last year. The cost for a returning participant to attend sessions 2 and 3 is $70 total.

Participants will apply learning between sessions and are encouraged to register with at least one colleague so they can engage in collegial learning throughout the year.
