It’s All About Instruction: ELA Formative Assessment Network for Grade 6-12 Educators

Maine DOE is pleased to announce a second series of workshops to support effective use of formative assessment practices in English language arts classrooms grades 6-12. Three successive workshops facilitated by the Maine DOE ELA Specialist and teacher leaders from across the state will build from current practices to extend and deepen knowledge about formative assessment practices.

SESSION 1: Foundational Elements of Formative Assessment Practices
October 12, 2017

This session will focus on creating meaningful learning goals and success criteria, eliciting the evidence that reflects those goals, and evaluating with the success criteria. Participants who are new to the series
will build knowledge to prepare for subsequent sessions while returning participants will explore methods of leading professional practice or PLCs.

SESSION 2: Feedback That Moves Learning Forward
December 6, 2017

Dig deeper into the relationship between effective feedback and success criteria emphasizing methods of enhancing student ownership of learning. Various methods of providing feedback for growth will be
demonstrated.

SESSION 3: Assessment Systems That Support Learning Transfer
January 24, 2018
Storm date: February 8, 2017*

Effective formative assessment habits and routines consistently practiced in the classroom lead to deeper learning. This final session will explore methods of using data to inform instruction (responding
to data at the classroom level), to close gaps in both curriculum and achievement, and to promote student ownership of learning and development of independence.

Sessions run from 8:30 – 3:00. Cost for all three sessions is $100. Please note that the new registration system requires payment at the time of registration.

Participants are encouraged to register with at least one colleague, from your school or another, to better engage in collegial learning throughout the year.
